אדריכלות ישראלית - גיליון 122

Functioning visually as an open space the small clinic is separated by smart glass partitions that can be "sealed" with the touch of a button. Flooded with natural light and a view of the Carmel landscape, the space takes on different functions, depending on changing usage. Architect: Noam Dahan while pissing on privacy. On one side the user who can never be sure that the "trick" will work, and on the other - passers-by who are trying to imagine the sensation of being inside while feeling outside. A similar effect is gained by installing a transparent shower in a master-bedroom, attempting to generate a romantic dimension, even and particularly when this has passed. Today, smart glass finds expression in many spaces where there is a need to turn off transparency, making it "opaque", thus controlling the public/private relationship, and in fact - internal/external relations. And this brings us back to sustainability, where the double quality is used to control natural light or block direct sun radiation, helping to improve climatic comfort. This facilitates a solution for one of the most difficult shading issues, mainly in tall buildings, where the best "sold" landscape is on the western facades, considered most problematic due to low sun radiation from noon onward. If until now this has been resolved via passive ceramic glass printing, electronic darkening actually functions as a dynamic shading device, adaptable to the hours of the day and seasons of the year. The relative advantage of this method is also inherent in the ability to control the desired degree of privacy, thus actually changing private/public relations, especially with regard to sustainability. There, the overall relationship of the building to its surroundings allows better adjustment when the purpose of the building changes.
