Its thick stone walls, originally built to adapt to the extreme climate of a very cold winter and extremely hot summer – were renovated to become a central motif of the design. The building is based on an open living space at the center of which is a contemporary interpretation of the serving counter that at the time stood in front of the oven. This was converted into a table/bench that gradually evolves into the staircase leading up to the bedroom. The natural light that penetrates through a set of aluminum windows, adds a dramatic dimension to the stone walls and wooden beams, generating a changing atmosphere in the course of the day and seasons. Adding extra space to the small house, the terrace is surrounded by a low wall including a garden, pergola, a small pool, and several trees for future shading. HBG Architects - Henrika Barros-Gomes.
