Right page: The Pantheon of Hadrian, Rome, is a fine example of a classic structure that demonstrates a remarkable use of natural light for functional and aesthetic qualities. An initiative of Agrippa I (grandson of Herod and Queen Shulamit), the building was designed during the reign of Augustus, as part of a civic center complex of three buildings, built in a north-south orientation for the best exploitation of sunlight. The Pantheon, however, was inaugurated only about a century later (128) during the reign of Hadrian after whom it is named. According to this, it is likely that the original pantheon designer was the Syrian architect Apollodorus from Damascus.
