Right page: Drainage paving stone - a system of interlocking stones with designed spacings (of one cm) that includes a gravel filling foundation, allowing water to seep slowly into the ground. A solution for delaying runoff to enrich groundwater, while reducing flooding and preventing puddles. In the photo: Drainage paving - Converse, Raanana. Design: Zur Wolf Landscape Architects Year 2020, according to the Chinese Zodiac, “The Year of the Rat”, which appears every twelve years parallel to leap year, needs no further explanation. It is a year of water characterized by global floods, tectonic activity, phobias and depression. However, floods and tectonic processes facilitate renewal of the earth surface, bringing about regrowth. Thus, 1972 - Year of the Rat, during which the nine Israeli sportsmen were murdered in Munich; twenty four people were killed at Lod airport, and one hundred and fifty six passengers and crew were killed in a plane crash in East Germany; in 1984, Bus Line 300 incident took place; and, in 2008 - the global economic crisis erupted in the United States after an economic boom. In this context, it is almost unnecessary to mention the Corona pandemic causing millions of deaths, loss of livelihood and, primarily – loneliness (uniting mainly older people), depression and suicide. Global warming and extreme waves of heat and cold illustrate a close correlation between human behavior and global abuse. Well explained in all esoteric teachings, it should serve as sober food for thought. This also finds expression in Biblical stories – Sodom and Gomorrah, Noah’s Flood, and the disruption of human communication during the building of the Tower of Babylon. And more recently; written by John Orwell in 1949, the book “1984” (naturally, a Year of the Rat) describes a despotic takeover of free man by the “thought police” by means of a dictionary of thoughts that would prevent any possibility of self- expression. The idea is that a minimum of words and the use of symbols (like emojis) constitute a way to restrict freedom of thought. Though perhaps to blame for the Corona Pandemic, the Chinese cannot be blamed for the natural disasters characteristic of leap years, nor for the fluctuations at the North Pole, nor the floods that caused rapid overflows in a number of Israeli cities along the coastal plain, paralyzing traffic in many places in the country and flooding buildings (primarily basements). The question is: why doesn’t the “smart” Israeli use innovative technologies to manage “water sensitive cities” as is customary in other developed cities of Europe, England, Australia and the USA. Clearly, a radical shift in human thinking patterns and behavior is essential.
