Guest of the Season / Steven Chilton Architects אדריכלות ישראלית Architecture of Israel #130 August 2022 | | 24 The Puzzle Ball Theatre, Huadu, Guangzhou, China Inspired by the traditional Chinese Puzzle Ball, the 2000 seat theatre is designed to house the local Yue permanent collection. Chinese puzzle balls are intricately carved sculptural ornaments consisting of several concentric spheres, each of which can be freely rotated. With this in mind, the structure is made of a two-layered steel dome, clad with insulated aluminium panels. The resulting pattern is a gentle variation of solids and voids. Using hierarchical subdivision, the main entrance is composed of a series of offset spherical surfaces, each with a circular opening that shrinks in size concentrically until it reaches the glazed portion of the façade.
