Street Dwellers' Day Shelter אדריכלות ישראלית Architecture of Israel #131 November 2022 | | 42 Located on Elizabeth Berger Street in Jaffa, the street-dwellers' day shelter is the first of its kind to be built from scratch in the country. Based on the right to live in dignity, the welcome social idea is backed-up by a design concept that wouldn't shame a five-star hotel; maintaining the tenants’ privacy and giving them a hope of returning to a normative life. The 750 sq. m, three-story building includes rooms for 144 tenants, with shared, for-two bedrooms with adjacent bathrooms, dining room and kitchen for 60 diners, workshops, a roof balcony with a sea view and front courtyard that opens to a public square. At this point, dwellers are allowed to stay at night but once the idea becomes mainstream it could turn into an archetype, with the hope for wider exploitation, teaching society that lacking a place to stay is not the problem of merely the homeless.
