It might sound somewhat like a cliche, but for me, a place is where the relationship between the architect and the building begins. Before we start developing a project we need a "place," a plot of land, and usually this gives me the keys to the project itself. Each building follows its own order according to its place. Without it, in architecture, we're working in emptiness. How does this relate to technologies, materials and tradition? All my projects have a common thrust; the respect for tradition. But what I am really focused on is renovation. It's important to preserve the most authentic principles of each place, of vernacular architecture, its context and its materials, but in an ever-changing world it's mandatory to follow evolution and its technology to be able to find a balance between local and global. Well, since local is fading lately in favor of global, what do you do in order to preserve the importance of its features? It is no secret that nowadays, with current thermal and waterproofing requirements, it is difficult to remain only local, especially when intelligent materials must be considered. However, if you ask me personally, Fábio Ferreira Neves is a Portuguese architect based in Zürich. Graduating in 2009 from ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, he won the Secil Universities Award as one of the five best architecture students in Portugal. Following his professional experience at Barbini Arquitectos in Lisbon, he moved, in 2011, to Chur, Switzerland, to collaborate with Corinna Menn and then to Zürich to work with Weberbrunner Architekten. With over 12 years experience working in Swiss offices, Fábio continued to work as an independent architect, leveraging his life as a regional Portuguese architect, and as a foreigner who resides outside his own country, paying enormous attention to place, context and tradition. The use of pure and tactile materials in his minimalist buildings come together in a unique portfolio that has been awarded, published and exhibited internationally, among the venues were the Lisbon Architecture Triennale and the Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2024 Fábio Ferreira Neves won the prestigious Europe 40under40 award as one of the world’s most promising talents in architecture and design.
