Levy, Or Menirom and Natasha Kroana.

initiative of the Psifas Israeli Fund.

project of the month

The Path Terminal has been inaugurated in

Manhattan. Designed by Santiago Calatrava

the lice-comb-like station, located at the

southern end of the Wedge of Lights Plaza,

connects to the open spaces reaching the

City Hall on one side, and Battery Park near

the Hudson on the other side.

students verging on architecture

Iftah Gazit, a third-year student of industrial

design at Bezalel, started his studies at the

age of 30 following a long military service.

“The most important lesson I learned at

home was not to accept things as they are,

not settle for the obvious and that aesthetics

is not everything”.

Students at the Industrial Design department

of the Ariel Technological College, were

asked to design a manual tool inspired by

an animal. The aim of this unusual request

was to encourage research as an important

factor of creative design. Among the most

interesting tools: a hand rake inspired by

a peacock; scissors inspired by a raccoon,

and a hammer inspired by an oryx.

books

A recently published book describing the

work of architect Yaacov Yaar is the first in a

series titled “Testimony”, aiming at passing

on the architectural heritage of those who

greatly influenced the local scene.

That's it for now, please write to me!

a mistake, sorry

A photo showing Rakefet School in Kiryat

Bialik, published in issue 104, was taken by

Amit Haas, who indeed deserves credit! By

the way, including names of photographer

and designer in the image's name could

prevent mistakes, aggravation and

melancholy.

awards & competitions

Moti Sasson, Mayor of Holon and Hannah

Hertzman, Director General of the

municipality, have been declared Notables

of the Architects Association for their

consistent encouragement of architecture

and architects.

The Goodovitch Prize was awarded to a

research study dealing with the history of

Israeli architecture from the beginning of

the settlement in the mid19th century to the

present day. Architect Israel Goodovitch said

he was sick of seeing imported architecture.

And he is right, Miri Regev thinks so too,

but no one understands that when she yells

“hands”, she is actually referring to manual

labor.

events

Architect Zaha Hadid, has died at the age of

65 following a heart attack. The thousands

of references throughout the world usually

mention that she was the first woman to win

the Pritzker Prize, but the truth is that she

was the first woman of architecture, period.

Three years ago, she sent us material about

the Galaxy SOHO Center in Beijing.

Our immediate response was that the

gigantic office complex was merely a

multiple reproduction of Foster’s London

City Hall. However, a deeper observation

revealed that to produce something of

this magnitude requires big balls, and not

the end of the world if it included those of

Foster’s, and possibly of Ram Koolhaas,

for whom she worked as a beginner. In

any case, her main contribution lay in

computerized architecture, and she did it

big-time, even if the majority of her projects,

interesting as they may be, are merely

environmental sculptures whose form

controls their content.

A section of the research department of the

Faculty of Architecture at the Technion is

returning to the historic building in Hadar,

Haifa. The return to the city has mainly

educational meaning since it creates a

symbolic connection to the city, where the

faculty was founded as a crucial part of the

Technion in 1925, at a time when symmetry

was still a supreme value, until someone

decided to move it in 1993 to Neve

Sha’anan. By the way, a similar incident

occurred at Bezalel, when the importance of

the urban context was understood and the

school of architecture was returned to the

historic building on Bezalel Street.

The Design Department of the Faculty of

Arts at Seminar Hakibbutzim College held its

third annual design conference titled Adults

Games. The topic gave various lecturers

an opportunity to examine the significance

of play and its impact on our professional,

social and ideological lives.

Master-Plan-1 to replace 300 national

outline plans has been approved. The main

sufferer will be the waterfront second line,

where construction will be almost freely

permitted. I am not sure that corruption was

involved, but in a political reality whereby all

and sundry take a bite out of the coalition

cake ... who knows. Culture certainly won’t

come out of it.

exhibitions

A display at the Zezeze Architecture Gallery

at the Tel Aviv Port, The exhibition, Story of a

Place, will show Malka Architects' work, from

May 19th. Established in 2000 by Meirav

and Eyal Malka, graduates of Wizo, Haifa,

the office has gained several awards. Eyal

Malka, who teaches at the Technion, raises

questions concerning the link between the

academic world, culture, and space.

The exhibition, AGame of Chairs, presented

at the WIZOAcademic Center gallery, Haifa,

focused on chairs designed by 36 leading

designers.

Things Were Never Told - a poster exhibition

designed by Iranian graphic designers

in the last 40 years will be shown at the

Museum of Islamic Art in Jerusalem.

About 60 posters, designed as part of the

resistance to prohibitions and restrictions on

freedom of expression under the Ayatollah

regime, reflect the history of Persian culture,

including the development of writing, from

traditional calligraphy to contemporary

digital fonts. 05/19/16 - 19/11/2016.

Curators: Yossi Lamel, and Marta

Sylvestrová, Moravian Gallery, Brno, Czech

Republic.
