The Park is in the largest open space at the heart of
the southernmost neighborhoods of Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
The area contains several important buildings and
archeological sites, such as St Peter Orthodox Church,
the Nature School, Zoological garden, Botanical
garden, historical wells and irrigation facilities,
indicating the importance of the Jaffa orchards, not
long ago the pride of the country.
Over the years the orchards were replaced by pine
forests and the place, forgotten and neglected, was
deserted. In addition, two highways (Pinhas Lavon
and Ofer Cohen) divided the area into four, virtually
eliminating its value as a park.
In 2009, Tel Aviv Municipality initiated a competition
for the replanning of the area. Shlomo Aronson
Architects, who won the competition, faced the
challenge of turning the neglected site into a place
that would attract all city residents without losing its
historic importance.
The design merged all four quarters into a continuous
area, renovating the playground facilities, cycling and
pedestrian paths and turning it into an attractive park
for residents and visitors.
